Ecclesiastes 11:5 – When Does Human Life Begin?

Summary

No one can fully know the work of God.

Analysis

This is a succinct expression of the limitations of our knowledge about God. The matter stated in the first half of the verse sounds like a very modern debate: When does human life in the womb actually begin? The second half draws a comparison. Just as we do not understand the beginnings of human life in the womb, so also we do not understand the works of God.

Ecclesiastes 11:5

5 Just as you do not know how the breath comes to the bones in the mother’s womb, so you do not know the work of God, who makes everything.
