John of Patmos

The Christian prophet who wrote Revelation.

Background

John was a Christian prophet who, on account of his testimony to Christ, was exiled to the island of Patmos, off the coast of Asia Minor. There John received the visions that are recounted in book of Revelation (Revelation 1:9-11). Some traditions have identified John of Patmos with Jesus' disciple John, the son of Zebedee, but it is more likely that they were two separate people.
