Cyrus

Persian leader who allowed Jewish exiles to return home.

Background

Cyrus became king of Persia in 555 B.C. and later conquered Babylon. In 538 B.C., he issued an edict allowing the Jews exiled in Babylon to return to Jerusalem and to rebuild the city and its temple.
