Jericho is one of the oldest cities in the world, having been founded around 8000 B.C.E. Located in the Jordan River valley near the Dead Sea, it has ample springs of water and lies on a fertile plain.
According to the Old Testament, Jericho was the first city to be captured by Joshua when the Israelites entered the land of Canaan. Joshua's soldiers are said to have marched around the city blowing trumpets, making the walls collapse (Joshua 6). Centuries later, the Prophet Elijah was taken up to heaven on a fiery chariot on the plains across from Jericho (2 Kings 2:4-11). In the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, scenes of Jesus in Jericho come just before his entrance into Jerusalem.
