Titus 3:5 – Baptismal Regeneration

Summary

God "saved us, not because of deeds done by us in righteousness, but in virtue of his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal in the Holy Spirit" (RSV).

Analysis

In the midst of writing about the conduct of Christians within a world of bad behavior, the writer speaks of God's saving work. Salvation is not the result of anyone's inherent goodness; it is the work of God. The person who is baptized is reborn and renewed by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Titus 3:5

5he saved us, not because of any works of righteousness that we had done, but according to his mercy, through the water* of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit.
