Hosea 4:1-3 – God’s Indictment of Israel

Summary

Hosea announces a word of judgment on the people because they lack "knowledge" of God.

Analysis

Hosea copies the style of a legal indictment to announce that God is bringing a lawsuit against the inhabitants of the land, because they lack knowledge of God. To lack knowledge of God does not mean just that the people lack intellectual information about who God is, but also that they lack moral and spiritual knowledge of how to follow God's ways. This lawsuit will result in a judgment against the defendants.

Hosea 4:1-3

God Accuses Israel

4Hear the word of the Lord, O people of Israel;
   for the Lord has an indictment against the inhabitants of the land.
There is no faithfulness or loyalty,
   and no knowledge of God in the land.
2 Swearing, lying, and murder,
   and stealing and adultery break out;
   bloodshed follows bloodshed.
3 Therefore the land mourns,
   and all who live in it languish;
together with the wild animals
   and the birds of the air,
   even the fish of the sea are perishing.
