Hosea 6:1-3 – A Call to Repentance

Summary

Hosea calls the people to repent and return to the Lord.

Analysis

Hosea calls the people to repent and to know the Lord--"Let us know, let us press on to know the Lord" (6:3). The people had turned away from God and proper knowledge of God. Hosea calls them back. He borrows language from the people's worship of false fertility gods--"revive us" and "raise us up" are borrowed from the worship of Baal--to call the people back to the true God, who alone can keep promises and who alone can revive the people.

Hosea 6:1-3

A Call to Repentance

6‘Come, let us return to the Lord;
   for it is he who has torn, and he will heal us;
   he has struck down, and he will bind us up.
2 After two days he will revive us;
   on the third day he will raise us up,
   that we may live before him.
3 Let us know, let us press on to know the Lord;
   his appearing is as sure as the dawn;
he will come to us like the showers,
   like the spring rains that water the earth.’
