2 Peter 1:3-4 – Everything We Need

Summary

The apostles may all have passed from the scene, and the social and political culture surrounding the church may have been taking a more threatening turn, but it is still true that in the apostolic teaching the church has been provided and entrusted with the power and the promises it needs to thrive in faithful witness.

Analysis

The author moves immediately at the beginning of the letter to direct his readers' attention to the foundation that has been provided for them already and to how durable this foundation remains, even in the face of threats and corruption. This might be read as an indirect reminder of the inheritance received from the apostles.

2 Peter 1:3-4

The Christian’s Call and Election

3 His divine power has given us everything needed for life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us by* his own glory and goodness. 4Thus he has given us, through these things, his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may escape from the corruption that is in the world because of lust, and may become participants in the divine nature.
