Zechariah 14:9, 16-19 – The LORD, King over All the Earth

Summary

Zechariah's oracles culminate with a description of the day of the LORD, when "the LORD will become king over all the earth."

Analysis

Zechariah's primary task is the rebuilding of the temple, with the restoration of covenant worship and obedience to the law among the returning Jewish exiles. However, his immediate goal of a rebuilt temple and a restored Jerusalem broadens into a sweeping final oracle where the God of Israel will be acknowledged as God and king over all the earth. People of all nations will look to Jerusalem as the center of worship.

Zechariah 14:9, 16-19

9 And the Lord will become king over all the earth; on that day the Lord will be one and his name one.

16 Then all who survive of the nations that have come against Jerusalem shall go up year by year to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, and to keep the festival of booths.* 17If any of the families of the earth do not go up to Jerusalem to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, there will be no rain upon them. 18And if the family of Egypt do not go up and present themselves, then on them shall* come the plague that the Lord inflicts on the nations that do not go up to keep the festival of booths.* 19Such shall be the punishment of Egypt and the punishment of all the nations that do not go up to keep the festival of booths.*
