Proverbs 26:13-16 – The Sin of Sloth

Summary

Don't be lazy.

Analysis

Here are some put-downs of laziness, or "sloth" as the older versions put it. Here is a person who will not work because of imagined dangers outside (v. 13); another who won't get out of bed, revolving like a swinging gate (v. 14); another who is too lazy to feed himself (v. 15); and finally one who has an inflated ego (v. 16). These writers were not without a sense of humor!

Proverbs 26:13-16

13 The lazy person says, ‘There is a lion in the road!
There is a lion in the streets!’
14 As a door turns on its hinges,
so does a lazy person in bed.
15 The lazy person buries a hand in the dish,
and is too tired to bring it back to the mouth.
16 The lazy person is wiser in self-esteem
than seven who can answer discreetly.
