People: Silas

Silas

Christian missionary who was imprisoned with Paul at Philippi.

Background

Silas was a church leader appointed to accompany Paul and others when they traveled to Antioch to deliver a letter from a conference in Jerusalem. When Paul later quarreled with his coworker Barnabas, Paul selected Silas to partner with him (Acts 15:22-40). Silas and Paul journeyed through Asia Minor into Macedonia where they were imprisoned for a night in Philippi (Acts 16:16-40). The two Letters to the Thessalonians name Silvanus (another name for Silas) as one of their coauthors.
