Passage: Mark 6:1-6

Mark 6:1-6 – Jesus Is Rejected in His Hometown of Nazareth

The second cycle of stories about Jesus and his ministry concludes with an account of his rejection by the people of his hometown.

Jesus returns to his own country to teach in the synagogue at Nazareth. The people question his wisdom and his mighty works because they know him to be the carpenter, the son of Mary, with brothers and sisters, and so they are offended at him. Jesus says, "Prophets are not without honor, except in their hometown, and among their own kin, and in their own house" (6:4). Unable to do deeds of power there, except healing a few sick people and curing them, Jesus is "amazed at their unbelief" (6:6).
