John 14:6 – Jesus Christ, the Way, and the Truth, and the Life
SummaryJesus identifies himself as the way, and the truth, and the life. People come to the Father through him.
AnalysisThe image of the way is an important one for Jesus. By speaking of the need for people to go to the Father, he understands that all people are separated from the Father by sin. For people to go to the Father, the barrier created by sin must be overcome. This occurs when Jesus goes the way of crucifixion and resurrection. He goes the way of the cross in order to become the way of life for others. Through his death and resurrection Jesus reveals the truth of the love and life that people receive from God. This is one of the seven "I am" sayings in John's Gospel. Since the expression "I am" recalls the name of God, who is the "I Am" (Exodus 3:14), these sayings emphasize that Jesus is God's Word in the flesh.
