Passage: Ezekiel 7:26-27

Ezekiel 7:26-27 – Doom Will Fall upon All of Society

Summary

The doom that Ezekiel predicts for Jerusalem will affect every social institution, including religious ones.

Analysis

This chapter is a long oracle of doom upon Judah and Jerusalem for their many sins. When the promised day of destruction comes, every segment of Jewish society will fail. Prophets will not see visions, priests will have no teaching from the law, and the wise will find no counsel of wisdom (7:26). Each of these offices represents a key aspect of Israelite religion: prophecy, law and ritual, and wisdom. Kings and rules also will fail, along with the people of the land (7:27). Thus all of Israelite society will fail and fall into destruction, according to God's word.
