John 19:25-27 – Jesus Entrusts His Mother and Beloved Disciple to Each Other

As he hangs on the cross, Jesus declares his mother and beloved disciple now to be part of the same family. Jesus thereby announces the creation of a new household of faith.

Jesus' mother and his beloved disciple stand near the cross during the crucifixion, and Jesus entrusts them to each other, saying, "Woman, here is your son," and, "Here is your mother." By speaking these words Jesus creates a new community at the foot of the cross. His mother and beloved disciple form the nucleus of a household of faith that will continue after Easter. Many more will join the community in time, but it is a community that traces its beginnings to the crucified Christ.

John 19:25-27

25And that is what the soldiers did.

Meanwhile, standing near the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her, he said to his mother, ‘Woman, here is your son.’ 27Then he said to the disciple, ‘Here is your mother.’ And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.
