The Tigris River is one of the great rivers that flows through Mesopotamia. As it approaches the Persian Gulf it joins with the Euphrates. Together these rivers help to create the Fertile Crescent, a band of land suitable for farming that runs northward along the coast of Palestine before following the Euphrates and Tigris rivers southeastward through Mesopotamia. In Old Testament times, the Assyrian capital of Nineveh was a major city along the Tigris River. Daniel is said to have received a vision while standing along the Tigris (Daniel 10:4).
